Teaching Vowel Sounds: Special Issues

/L/ and /R/

/L/ and /R/ are two consonants that are very loud and this can sometimes mask the vowel sound.

     for example:
  • practical - the short /u/ [for some, a short /o/] is overpowered by the loud /l/ sound.
  • terrorism Vs. tourism - the short /e/ in terrorism and long /u/ in tourism are somewhat masked by the loud /r/ sound. No one wants their students to mistakenly tell the customs officer at the airport that they're here for terrorism just because they can't distinguish the difference in vowel sounds.

Another issue with /l/ arises when we consider the fact that /l/ can sometimes act like a vowel.

for example: We know that syllables are made of vowel sounds, but in the two-syllable word table, the second syllable is formed by the /l/ sound.

Vowel Combinations

There are a few vowel sounds that are formed by a combination of vowels or vowels with consonants.

for example: the [ow] sound as in how or shout and the [oi] sound as in oil or toy.
