Present and Future Passives
The Present Tenses:
The only part of the passive formulas that really change from the past to the present (or the future) are the be and have verbs.
- simple present = am/is/are + p.p....where p.p. = past participle*
ex: Tom studies math in school. (active)
ex: Math is studied by Tom in school. (passive)
- present continuous = am/is/are + being + p.p.
ex: Tom is studying math in school. (active)
ex: Math is being studied by Tom in school. (passive)
- present perfect = has/have + been + p.p.
ex: Tom has studied math in school. (active)
ex: Math has been studied by Tom in school. (passive)
- present perfect continuous = has/have + been + being + p.p.
ex: Tom has been studying math in school. (active)
ex: Math has been being studied by Tom in school. (passive)
The Future Tenses:
Although the simple future and future continuous are used somewhat often in the passive, the future perfect and future perfect continuous very rarely are. Nonetheless, I'll include them in the examples below just for the sake of completing the set as it were.
- simple future = will be + p.p.
ex: Tom will study math in school. (active)
ex: Math will be studied by Tom in school. (passive)
- future continuous = will be + being + p.p.
ex: Tom will be studying math in school. (active)
ex: Math will be being studied by Tom in school. (passive)
- future perfect = will have + been + p.p.
ex: Tom will have studied math in school. (active)
ex: Math will have been studied by Tom in school. (passive)
- future perfect continuous = will have + been + being + p.p.
ex: Tom will have been studying math in school. (active)
ex: Math will have been being studied by Tom in school. (passive)
